The Windmill Harbour Lock is now open.
February 25, 2010 -- The Windmill Harbour lock is now open. It’s been closed for about 6 weeks for preventative maintenance. Every 10 years, the lock is taken apart for a major overhaul. Temporary “dams” are built to keep water out of the lock and then the 4 muiti-ton doors are removed and taken by truck to an indoor shop. They are scraped of barnacles and painted. Bearings are replaced and greased and all other parts are checked. This process is started months before the actual removal. Boat owners are given ample notice of the closing and they have the option of staying in the harbour for the duration or moving temporarily to another location. |
